Ayampe The “Hotspot” Of The Birds

Did you know that the second smallest hummingbird in the world is found in Ayampe? This little animal is called Estrellita Esmeraldeña and it lives in humid forests like this place.

This forest in Ayampe is unique at sea level, also known as cloud forest, it is formed due to the Chongón-Colonche mountain range, the humidity of the sea that condenses in the mountains feeds the Ayampe River. 

In this lung of nature there is an extensive number of birds due to the climate and vegetation. There are hiking tours where you can visit and live this experience of nature.

Additionally, the Ayampe River flows into the ocean and forms a lagoon with mangroves near the town of Ayampe, which is home to more species of birds.

The Chongón-Colonche mountain range is the only source of freshwater in the area and contains an impressive biodiversity. The importance of the Ayampe River area has been pointed out by Birdlife International, which has included this area as an Important Bird Area for Ecuador and included with the Machalilla National Park.

Currently there is protection by the natives and the government of Ecuador to take care of this bird watching to preserve its trees and the homes of these animals.
